About this coffee

This fully washed lot comes from the Virgin Mountain area of Papua New Guinea's Eastern Highlands. It's grown by smallholders in traditional "coffee gardens", small plots that are usually one to two hectares.

Most coffee in Papua New Guinea is grown this way, with the coffee trees planted among shade trees such as Casuarina and Albizia. After independence in 1975, many of the big plantations were split into smaller holdings. Today these are run by tenant block holders, with help from extended family.

Virgin Mountain takes its name from the remote country around the Nori Kori Valley. The coffee grows on fertile mountain slopes and along the forest edge, which marks the customary land boundary between the Kamano/Kafe and Gadzup communities.

Farm and processing

The coffee comes from villages across the Nori Kori Valley. You reach it through the Aiyura Valley, from the town of Kainantu. The trees grow along the edges of primary forest, in nutrient-rich highland soil above 1,600 metres.

It's fully washed, which gives a clean, balanced cup and lets the Arusha and Typica come through. Expect rich sweetness and layers of fruit, with a light floral note.
